Mak Bedah spawns a mob in Petaling Jaya
26 February 2008
Report from a Bedah researcher

Overnight sensation Mak Bedah has confessed feeling “shocked…but flattered” at the emergence of a Mak Bedah mob that was spotted in SS2 last night. The small but visible mob of five selendang-clad women, all calling themselves Mak Bedah, drew stares and applause when they started asking candidates from both ruling and opposition parties their stand on human rights. Three of the Mak Bedahs spoke fluent Chinese and captivated a crowd of university students, who took notes and pictures of the mob.

“I had no idea my message would become so fofular,” confessed the real Mak Bedah. Mak Bedah first made her appearance on nomination day on the grounds of the MBPJ, pushing a shopping trolley and carrying a shopping list of various human rights demands from the candidates for the 12th General Elections. Clad in a floral baju kurung, purple selendang and sunglasses to overcome her astigmatism, Mak Bedah graced the pages of several mainstream newspapers the very next day, with her list of brave demands.

“But this mob of women going around, they all ni kira my peminat ke?” asked Mak Bedah coyly to this reporter.

Last night, the Mak Bedah mob went to a DAP forum, and managed to speak to the DAP candidate for the PJ Utara Parliamentary seat, Tony Pua. Tony was undoubtedly excited to be surrounded by the five women, but stuck to principles in his conversation and immediately endorsed Mak Bedah’s shopping list, which is a summary of the manifesto of the Women’s Candidacy Initiative.

However, when the Mak Bedah mob attempted to speak to the BN Parliamentary candidate for PJ Selatan, Donald Lim, they were stopped by a group of men, who later confessed to being plainclothes policemen. When the five Mak Bedahs invited the gentlemen to browse WCI’s website, one of the men confessed to not having an internet connection.

When Donald Lim finally arrived, the five Mak Bedahs made an attempt to approach him but were immediately told by Donald to shut up. The tallest of the Mak Bedahs then told him that even though their purple selendangs were a bit over-the-top, they were still ordinary women voters who wanted to find out what he stood for, and if he was going to silence them how could he expect to gain their votes?

Evidently not caring too much about being snubbed by Donald Lim, the Mak Bedahs then approached Chew Mei Fun, the BN Parliamentary candidate for PJ Utara. Chew smiled and invited them to have a private chat with her. She assured the Mak Bedahs that even as a BN MP, she had always spoken out against sexist MPs in Parliament. Again, the most vertically privileged Mak Bedah pointed out to Chew that what was really important now is Chew’s commitment to take even sterner action against sexist leaders in the future.

Chew remained friendly and non-committal but promised to look through WCI’s demands first. At this point in time, Donald Lim decided to approach the Mak Bedah mob again and apologized for his brusque manner before. By this time, the Mak Bedahs were already excited by the enthusiasm shown by Tony Pua and flocked to his ceramah instead.

Unable to restrain themselves, the five Mak Bedahs interrupted Tony’s speech with five questions.

“Will you stand up against sexist MPs, whether BN or Opposition?”
Tony replied, “Yes, I will ask them to resign!” and the crowd cheered.

“Would you vote against privatization of health and education?”
Again Tony replied, “Yes!” and the crowd clapped their hands sore.

“Would you push for 30% of women's participation in Parliament?”
Tony hardly even blinked and said, “Yes.”

“Would you push for local council elections?”
“Yes.”

“Would you endorse WCI manifesto?”
Tony, realizing he had to expand his vocabulary, said, “100%!” and the crowd roared and clapped.

And then of course, the tallest of the Mak Bedahs just had to slip in a final comment.
“If you are voted in, WCI and Mak Bedah will monitor that you deliver and hold you accountable to what you have promised.”

To which Tony replied warmly, “Please do that!”

The Mak Bedah mob then distributed all their leaflets to the public and dispersed.

“Baguslah kalau gitu,” quipped the real Mak Bedah upon learning of this event. “I just want more men and women to approach their candidates and very selamba ask what their vision is for our country. I want my human rights, I want more women as leaders, and I want cheaper petrol and shoes.”

**********

Mak Bedah

Shop for what?? Of course, "Shopping for a REAL cendidate" lah.

我们的口号《2,4,6,8 Shopping for a Candidate;A,B,C,D Justice & Equality》

8.15am

Shopping for a REAL candidate
